The UK’s TaxPayers’ Alliance (TPA) celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. And how does it observe this milestone? By celebrating its part in securing tax cuts worth £37 billion ($62.15 billion) in 2014-15 for hard-pressed taxpayers in the UK.

TPA takes its role as Britain’s independent grassroots campaign for lower taxes very seriously. Its focus on impact was recognised last year when it won Atlas Network’s prestigious Templeton Freedom Award.

Additionally, in 2012 TaxPayers’ Alliance won the Atlas Network’s Think Tank Shark Tank competition for their project With the prize money, TPA distributed hundreds of thousands of cardboard beer coasters to pubs around the country raising awareness about the rising costs of government taxes on beer.

Jonathan Isaby took up the post of Chief Executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance in January 2014. He joined TPA in August 2011 as Political Director, in which capacity he oversaw a substantial increase in engagement with parliamentarians, government ministers and civil servants across Whitehall. Having made regular briefings for politicians across the political spectrum a staple of the TPA's work, our research now regularly gets cited in parliamentary debates, questions and even answers. He has also given written and oral evidence to House of Commons Select Committees and produced submissions for a variety of other inquiries and consultations. Organising face-to-face meetings with Cabinet and shadow cabinet ministers, as well as identifying backbenchers with whom the TPA could find common cause, Jonathan has ensured that the voice of the taxpayer is reverberating around the corridors of power more loudly than ever.

John O'Connell joined the TaxPayers’ Alliance in February 2009 as an intern and has now risen to become Director. He oversees the work of the research, grassroots, campaign and media teams.

As a researcher, and later Research Director, he wrote major reports for the TPA on quangos, government capital procurement, regional business policy and local government pensions. He co-authored the influential paper How to Save £50 Billion: reducing spending for sustainable public finances, released in conjunction with the Institute of Directors. He also uncovered how local councils were spending Preventing Violent Extremism grants, finding more detailed information than could be gathered by Parliamentary Questions.

John oversaw the work of the 2020 Tax Commission. He also wrote and edited several sections of its final report, The Single Income Tax, which won the Templeton Freedom Award from the Atlas Network.

Gonzalo Schwarz (moderator) manages the Awards and Grants program that include the prestigious Fisher Memorial Award and Templeton Freedom Awards.  Additionally he manages the Latin American Program. He currently holds an MA in Economics from George Mason University and is looking to pursue other graduate studies. He is originally from Uruguay and has lived in four other countries throughout his life. In the past he worked in academics and other non profits. He enjoys participating in academic seminars and was also part of the Koch Foundation Fall internship in 2009. His main hobbies are sports, reading and spending time with his family.
