UNPREDICTABLE PUTIN, UNCERTAIN UKRAINE

Russian President Vladimir Putin says the May 25 presidential election in Ukraine is a “step in the right direction.” He also called on pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine to postpone a May 11 referendum on independence. (Putin’s second statement is odd, since without Russian support and the Russian army positioned close to Ukraine’s border, the separatist movement would not have grown so fast.)

Walking down Kiev’s main street, Khreshchatyk, towards the central square, Maidan Nezalezhnosti, or Independence Square, you encounter few barricades, only a thin gate secured by young people wearing camouflage. Kiev is defiant these days. Protesters have occupied Maidan since November. Initially their main motto was “Integration with the European Union,” so the movement is called Euromaidan. But a lot has changed since then.
