The Independent Institute has been active for over 30 years and presents a forward-looking, optimistic, and solutions-oriented vision in its work. In its many publications it seeks to reach communities of impact with real solutions to the problems of limited economic freedom and overbearing government. Its latest effort is the book China’s Great Migration: How the Poor Built a Prosperous Nation, written by Research Fellow Bradley M. Gardner, a former East Asia correspondent for The Economist who has since become a Foreign Service Officer at the U.S. Department of State.
This book has been recognized by the Independent Publisher — who awarded it a Gold Medal in the Political/Economic/Foreign Affairs category — and by the Independent Book Publishers Association, who gave it the Benjamin Franklin Award in the Political/Current Events category. According to Independent Institute Founder, President, and CEO David Theroux, these two awards represent “the best winning combination” an Independent Institute book has had to date.
“China’s Great Migration: How the Poor Built a Prosperous Nation is important because of its message of economic transformation,” said Robert Ade, communications manager at Independent Institute. “Pulling over 700 million people of people out of poverty came about not by bureaucratic initiative, but by Chinese peasants leaving the country to go to the cities in search of better lives. This book, more than anything, illustrates the power of individual initiative. It’s a lesson which we can all learn. People are motivated and will move across borders for better opportunities for them and their families.”
Work like this highlights the benefits of economic freedom and furthers the Independent Institute’s goal of “showing how to take steps toward a free society,” Ade continued. “We also show the real costs of government failure — the costs of government efforts to thwart people striving to improve their own lives. Instead of just accepting new government initiatives, we highlight the dynamic process of markets and innovation without regard to prevailing popular or political biases, trends or phobias. We’re not afraid of new, bold solutions to problems some see as unsolvable.”
In addition to book publications, the Independent Institute utilizes multiple platforms in order to spread its ideas. One success is its YouTube series called “Love Gov: From First Date to Mandate” which satirically shows the failure of government in, healthcare, affordable housing, employment opportunities, and student debt. This series has received over 7.4 million views, won 10 film awards — including Atlas Network’s 2015 Lights, Camera, Liberty Award — and has inspired a second season which is scheduled for release this summer. With projects like these, the Independent Institute is effectively reaching people with their message of how private solutions can help solve the problems that governments create.
