Tax Freedom Day is celebrated annually by the Bulgarian Libertarian Society (BLS) and the Institute for Market Economics—two Bulgarian-based Atlas Network partners. Since 2017, they organize a public festival that popularizes the day when Bulgarians stop working for the government and begin working for themselves—this year, it landed on May 18. On the day of the celebration, BLS ventured to the busiest pedestrian street in central Sofia to educate passersby about their status as taxpayers.

"We wanted to show how much of what the state takes away from everyone is hidden behind clever accounting rules and misrepresentation of facts. That every working Bulgarian has to give up 40-50% of their income to fund all the government schemes and redistribution." said Stoyan Panchev, Chairman of the Bulgarian Libertarian Society.
