Know Square, a business development network in Spain, has chosen a new book by Daniel Lacalle, chief of strategy for Atlas Network partner Civismo, as one of its 10 finalists for best book of 2014. Released in November, Lacalle’s book, La Madre de Todas las Batallas (The Mother of All Battles), examines the global energy market and how the invisible hand of private enterprise contrasts with the perverse incentives of government intervention.
Calling the work “objetivo e imparcial” (“objective and impartial”), Know Square praises Lacalle’s ability to draw informed and notable examples from the multifaceted world of energy markets and consolidate them into an entertaining narrative that’s easy for laymen to understand.
In addition to his work with Civismo, Lacalle is an economist and fund manager who has spent more than 20 years working in finance. He frequently publishes work analyzing energy markets, and an English edition of La Madre de Todas las Batallas is scheduled to be published by Wiley in March, under the title The Energy World Is Flat: Opportunities From the End of Peak Oil.
The Know Square jury chose Lacalle’s book and the other nine finalists from a pool of 80 candidates, evaluating them on seven primary criteria: originality, humanistic spirit, time-for-value, influence, opportunity, new knowledge, practicality, and transcendence. The award winner will be announced on Jan. 29.
