Students for Liberty Brazil has been named the winner of Atlas Network’s 2019 Smith Student Outreach Award for their Market Revolution project. “This is the boldest move our organization has ever made,” explained Andre Migliore Freo of SFL Brazil. The campaign was a multi-pronged strategy aimed at changing the public’s opinion of entrepreneurship, as well as educating policymakers on the benefits of legislation that supports business growth and free markets.
To help younger Brazilians understand the dangers of overregulation, SFL Brazil hosted 40 events across the country, reaching more than 5,000 attendees and achieving significant media coverage. Free online versions of The Morality of Capitalism by Atlas Network’s Dr. Tom Palmer were offered to event attendees, which received over 1,100 downloads. The flagship event series included a discussion with the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, who took the opportunity to reiterate the importance of entrepreneurship in Brazil, and announced a series of policies that will reduce the burden of starting a business in his state.
Highlighting the poor score that Brazil received in the World Bank’s Doing Business Index (140th out of 190 nations), SFL Brazil engaged with lawmakers to promote public policy that helps entrepreneurship succeed. Through their advocacy, the group had 20 congressmen from 7 different parties sign a pledge in favor of a more entrepreneurial Brazil. Additionally, President Jair Bolsonaro signed the Provisional Measure of Economic Freedom, produced by SFL Brazil alumni Gianluca Lorenzon, which was recently signed into law by Congress and is expected to encourage the creation of almost 4 million jobs.
The Market Revolution project has changed the way organizations around the world educate and advocate on behalf of entrepreneurialism. In fact, the campaign was so successful that SFL International will now make this a global campaign in all regions with an active SFL presence. Additionally, RELIAL, one of the largest free-market networks in Latin America, has recognized Market Revolution as one of the top pro-entrepreneurship projects in the region.
“Atlas Network has played a key role in helping Students For Liberty Brazil accomplish its mission to educate and empower the next generation of leaders of liberty. Not only by believing in the same ideas we believe in, but by reassuring us time after time that we should engage in campaigns that bring a real change to the political environment we currently live in,” explained Freo. “Students for Liberty Brazil couldn't be happier and prouder by having such an incredible Network as a partner!” SFL Brazil will be honored for their work at Atlas Network’s annual Liberty Forum in New York City on November 6, 2019.
