Atlas Network is proud to present the 2023 Africa Liberty Award to Students for Liberty. The award was accepted by Linda Kavuka, director of African programs, at Africa Liberty Forum 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Africa Liberty Award is part of the “Templeton Freedom Award” prize program sponsored by Templeton Religion Trust—named for the late investor and philanthropist Sir John Templeton. In addition to Africa, the program sponsors awards in Europe, Asia, Latin America, North America, and the Middle East & North Africa. Its grand prize, the Templeton Freedom Award, is presented annually at Atlas Network’s Liberty Forum & Freedom Dinner in New York City. In 2023, the prize program will award $270,000 in grants to high-achieving organizations that make innovative contributions to economic freedom and human progress.

In recent years, Africa has experienced a surge in the establishment of think tanks and enactment of policy changes that embrace classical liberalism. Much of this progress is due to the remarkable efforts of nearly 1,400 African Students for Liberty alumni that have formed organizations and achieved policy wins since completing the program. Students for Liberty program participants receive top-tier opportunities for professional development and education, customizing what they learn to the needs of their respective regions. The impact of the Students for Liberty program is evident in the formation of over 20 pro-liberty think tanks by African alumni, accounting for the majority of the continent’s think tank boom, and a staggering 1,550 applications received from 36 African countries for the upcoming Students for Liberty fellowship.

“Our African partners have fearlessly championed the cause of freedom and the inherent worth of every individual," said Brad Lips, CEO of Atlas Network. "The Eastern Caucus, Free Market Foundation, and Students for Liberty have made significant progress over the past year, setting a shining example for pro-liberty think tanks and advocates across the globe. We embrace this opportunity to honor their remarkable accomplishments.”
