MLI case study shows how engaging non-traditional allies can create free-market change

The history of Canada’s Aboriginal people is one of state dependency and a lack of opportunity. To address these challenges, Macdonald-Laurier Institute for Public Policy (MLI)’s multi-year Aboriginal Canada and the Natural Resource Economy project has made the case that Indigenous engagement in the booming Canadian resource economy provides a once-in-a-century opportunity to set right the fundamental inequalities within Canadian life.

Canada should learn from Australia's failed carbon tax experiment

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in October that the nation’s provinces must implement a carbon tax by 2018 or the federal government would do it instead. In the three months since then, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, an Atlas Network partner based in Saskatchewan, has led the policy debate by arguing that a carbon tax would result in steep energy prices — “up to $2,569 per year for the average Canadian family by 2022” — all without making a substantive impact on global climate change.

Is liberty an Asian value?

A frequent challenge raised against classical liberalism is that it is not suitable for Asian people or Asian countries, because of “Asian values” that are allegedly unique to Asian countries. Is Asian liberty different from European or American or African Liberty? Or, if liberty is being used in the same way in those regions, is it a reasonable principle for Asian governments and laws, or are Asian values incompatible with liberty? One could also ask whether there is one core of values that are common to all Asians, who inhabit a vast region encompassing billions of people speaking hundreds of languages, professing a wide variety of religions, and heirs to thousands of years of multifarious cultural developments.

ALA grad reaches next generation of Canadian students

ILS recently wrapped up its second annual Freedom Week, with Atlas Leadership Academy (ALA) graduate Janet Neilson leading the effort to teach students about the classical liberal foundation of Canadian society and the application of these ideas to current issues and societal challenges.

Canada shows it can be done

Canada used to be the butt of jokes when it came to economic freedom. A Wall Street Journal article declared the country an “honorary member of the third world” in the mid-1990s because of out-of-control debt and spending.
